The Master Plan for Maple Grove Cemetery was a comprehensive assessment of the site; operations and maintenance; and included an analysis of the condition and functioning of the administration and maintenance buildings. During the development of the plan, three critical needs emerged to be addressed: Cemetery burial space development, visual character and maintenance practices, and administration function. Analysis of available burial space revealed that at the current rate of grave sales, all available open space could be developed and sold for full body burial within ten years. Clearly a new approach to the development of burial space was needed to extend active cemetery use. The landscape character of the cemetery also needed improvement in many areas. Without a comprehensive tree planting effort, over half of the mature trees within the cemetery would be gone within twenty five years and the cemetery would lose much of its pleasant character. Improved maintenance practices were also needed to increase efficiency of operations and improve horticultural practices and the existing maintenance buildings were antiquated. Most importantly, the functioning of the administration of the cemetery was greatly constrained by the size of the small office that did not provide and privacy for families with immediate need of burial space. The master plan provided a detailed assessment of the existing conditions and identified specific recommendations for meeting the challenges faced by the institution.
