Hillside tombs on steep embankments are common at many historic cemeteries. At Woodlawn Cemetery, three historic hillside tombs were in need of major repair because erosion had begun to undermine them. To control the erosion, a new concrete retaining wall faced with granite ashlar blocks was designed by Hines Wasser + Associates. To defray the cost of construction and repair and to provide new burial space, the design included 160 large ashlar blocks suitable for memorial inscriptions in association with cremain and full body burials.

Phase two of the project will involve removal of the existing paved lane and installation of lawn crypts.
