As part of this historic cemetery’s program to reclaim unnecessary paved lanes for new grave development, Hines Wasser + Associates designed several infill development projects utilizing lawn crypts along with new planting concepts that created more differentiation of spaces within larger sections. Woodlawn Cemetery also wanted to determine whether shared memorialization in association with full body burial would be acceptable to their current traditional clientele. Two large upright monuments were designed and located as features within garden spaces to act as architectural focal points within a large section restricted to flush markers. Each of the four sides would be sold separately along with a double grave (4 full body burials). If this concept was well received, the second phase involved framing the garden spaces with ornamental stone edging for use as memorials in association with full body burial.
